AFL Preview: Phoenix Desert Dogs

logodesertdogsTeams: Baltimore, Oakland, Toronto, Tampa Bay, Washington

Overview: The Desert Dogs are off to a hot start during the Arizona Fall League despite many notable absences, including Grant Green (Oakland), Desmond Jennings (Tampa), and Jake Arrieta (Baltimore).

Top Prospect: Stephen Strasburg.

Other Prospects: Drew Storen is an interesting player to watch from the Washington Nationals system.  He was drafted this year as a closer after a successful career as a closer in college.  All reports say that the Nationals have put him on the fast track and with their shaky bullpen he could be their closer at some point during 2010.  Another top prospect on the Desert Dogs is Nations First Baseman Chris Marrero.  Marrero is a solid first baseman long-projected to eventually form a solid corner infield combination with Ryan Zimmerman. Jemile Weeks is an additional top prospect.  Rickie’s younger brother, Jemile was Oakland’s first round pick from the University of Miami.

Honorable Mention: Former Orioles prospect, Adam Loewen, is attempting to re-emerge as a hitter after arm injuries derailed his pitching career.  Another player to keep an eye on is Brad Emaus.  He has impressed in Blue Jays system with little experience showing above average hitting and power tools but whether he’ll be a fantasy contributor is yet to be determined.
