Teams: Angels, Marlins, Twins, Cubs, and Red Sox
Overview: The Solar Sox have 5-6 top 100 prospects on their roster, and look like a pretty solid team.
Top Prospect: Marlins Outfielder Mike Stanton, who is probably tired of being compared to Dave Winfield. Stanton is a smart hitter known for great work ethic whose numbers has increased steadily upon entering the Minor Leagues. Stanton encountered his first minor slump late this season, but he should bounce back and his is most definitely going to be a fantasy impact player at some point.
Other Prospects: There are some great prospects in the infield, most notably Matt Dominguez, Josh Vitters, and Casey Kelly. Kelly is a former high school quarterback from Florida who has emerged as one of Boston’s top prospects. He has been playing SS and P but the Red Sox want him to pick one soon, I think they feel he has a higher ceiling as a pitcher, and concentrate solely on that position. The Solar Sox have several solid pitchers, most notably Andrew Miller. Coming out of UNC, Miller was considered the best pitcher in college baseball several seasons ago. He was traded along with Cameron Maybin in the Miguel Cabrera trade but has yet to produce the numbers expected from him several years ago. Older than most in the AFL, he is looking to revive his career and return to that elite status he had when drafted.
Honorable Mention: The team features one Cuban defector, Jose Iglesias. Signed by the Red Sox this summer for just over $8 million even at 19 his bat apparently is already good enough to justify the money. The Red Sox are having him play in the AFL to figure out exactly what they got so with their lack of a SS, any success over the Winter could have him on the fast track to Boston. For an in depth profile on Jose Iglesias from the Boston Herald go here. One catcher on the team of note is Hank Conger. Out of the Angels organization he struggled making the adjustment to catcher. But now he is much more comfortable with the position, his bat is coming alive and his stock is rising.
