Purchasing players on the disabled list provides an interesting challenge. By knowing the injury status of a disabled player, you can sometimes pickup great bargains. But it is a huge mistake to purchase a player on the DL, and then ask, “how badly is he hurt?” I learned my lesson two seasons ago purchasing Mark Mulder from the disabled list.
Unless you have access to information at your draft, it is difficult to know the extent of a particular player’s injuries off-hand. The following is a basic reference of the status of “notable” players on the disabled list. “Beware” simply means the player’s value should be discounted because it is possible the injury could cause lingering effects, but in some cases, players are marked “beware” because of other concerns.
April (healthy): Lance Berkman, Scott Kazmir, Ian Kinsler, Russell Branyan.
April (beware): Daisuke Matsuzaka, Ted Lilly, Brad Lidge, Alex Gordon.
May/June (healthy): Cliff Lee, Huston Street, Joe Blanton, Coco Crisp, Freddy Sanchez, Daniel Murphy, Mat Gamel.
May/June (beware): Carlos Beltran, Brandon Webb, Trevor Cahill, Jed Lowrie, Jeff Francis, Ross Detwiler.
Who Knows (i.e., don’t count on much): Chien-Ming Wang, Jesus Flores.
Probably Next Year: Joe Nathan, Edinson Volquez, Jordan Zimmerman, Junichi Tazawa.
