Dayan Viciedo, a Cuban prospect who was often-maligned during last season’s debut at AA Birmingham, is off to a solid start this season in AAA. Viciedo has 9 homers while managing to keep his batting average above .300. Many of the red flags which subjected Viciedo to criticism remain, most notably his K/BB ratio, which remains dismal.
But Viciedo continues to hit, and with his performance, it’s time to consider him a solid prospect considering he is still only 21 years old with potential for improvement. It will likely take an injury to Konerko or Andruw Jones for Viciedo to be called up before September, but with Paul Konerko entering the final year of his contract, look for him to enter next season being given the opportunity to start at first base for the White Sox.
If Viciedo gets a brief callup this season, he is recommended as a long-term buy in deep keeper leagues.
