Top 250 Prospects Update: June 6, 2011

Top 250 Prospects Update: June 6, 2011

Here is this week’s version of the Top 250 Prospects. This version is a little different because it focuses on the draft.  So rather than the biggest movers, the “bold names” are the 2011 draftees along with their respective new teams.  I adjusted many of the draftees’ rankings because  along with learning the bonus the player receives, where a player is drafted provides valuable information. We’ll keep updating each week and feedback is always appreciated.

Note: Next week’s update will be “back to normal” and focus on prospect performances, but since the draft was tonight, I thought each team’s new prospects was more interesting.

1. Bryce Harper—OF, Nationals
2. Mike Trout—OF, Angels
3. Eric Hosmer—1B, Royals
4. Jeremy Hellickson—P, Rays
5. Michael Pineda—P, Mariners
6. Julio Teheran—P, Braves

8. Domonic Brown—OF, Phillies
9. Mike Moustakas— 3B, Royals

12. Zach Britton—P, Orioles (-7)
13. Jesus Montero—C, Yankees (-5)
14. Shelby Miller—P, Cardinals

Top pick in this year’s draft profiles as a future #1 starter.
16. Brett Lawrie—3B, Blue Jays (+5)
17. Jacob Turner—P, Tigers
18. Jameson Taillon—P, Pirates

Fell big time…I still agree w/ our old ranking assuming nothing really bad in the health report.

20. Lonnie Chisenhall—3B, Indians
21. Matt Moore—P, Rays
22. Martin Perez—P, Rangers
23. Wil Myers—OF, Royals
24. Yu Darvish—P, Japan
25. Manny Banuelos—P, Yankees
26. Dylan Bundy—P, Orioles (+6)
Orioles use the #4 pick to grab the best HS pitcher in this year’s class.

28. Kyle Gibson—P, Twins
29. Freddie Freeman—1B, Braves
30. Drew Pomeranz—P, Indians
31. Anthony Rizzo—1B, Padres
32. Jordan Lyles—P, Astros
33. Brandon Belt—1B, Giants (-4)
34. Danny Hultzen—P, Mariners (+8)
One of the safer picks…honestly didn’t love Hultzen at #2 but Seattle has great scouts.

35. Jurickson Profar—SS, Rangers (+7)
36. Brett Jackson—OF, Cubs (-5)
37. Jake Odorizzi—P, Royals (+1)
38. Devin Mesoraco—C, Reds (+1)

44. Danny Duffy—P, Royals
45. Zach Lee—P, Dodgers (-9)

51. Yonder Alonso—1B, Reds (+3)

59. Aroldis Chapman—P, Reds (-14)
60. Nick Franklin—SS, Mariners
61. George Springer—OF, Astros (+16)
16 spot promotion is a little aggressive…probably Astro bias.

62. Jason Kipnis—2B, Indians
63. Rubby De La Rosa—P, Dodgers
64. Matt Harvey—P, Mets (+2)
65. Wilin Rosario—C, Rockies (-9)
66. Jordan Walden—P, Angels

Depending on bonus demands, I think the A’s made a solid pick getting Gray at #18.

68. Tyler Chatwood—P, Angels
69. Matt Barnes—P, Red Sox (-15)
I liked this pick at #19.  Thought there was a big talent drop-off after Gray and Barnes.
70. Jonathan Singleton—1B, Phillies (+15)
71. Yasmani Grandal—C, Reds
72. Grant Green—SS, Athletics (-4)
73. Jerry Sands—OF, Dodgers (-4)

82. Tony Sanchez—C, Pirates (-5)
83. Gary Sanchez—C, Yankees
84. Alexander Colome—P, Rays
85. Taylor Jungmann—P, Brewers (-20)
20 spot demotion was arguably too much here.
..Pretty good value at #12.
86. Wilson Ramos— C, Nationals
87. Trey McNutt—P, Cubs (-18)
88. Aaron Crow—P, Royals (+27)
89. Zach Cox—3B, Cardinals
90. James Darnell—3B, Padres
91. Archie Bradley—P, Diamondbacks (+11)
Bradley/Bauer can be a good combination, but will he be a tough sign b/c of the QB scholarship?

95. Arodys Vizcaino—P, Braves

102. Jose Iglesias—SS, Red Sox
103. Alex White—P, Indians

118. Anthony Gose—OF, Blue Jays

151. Johnny Giavotella—2B, Royals (+9)
152. Joe Benson—OF, Twins (+6)
153. Fernando Salas—P, Cardinals
154. Alex Meyer—P, Nationals
Went a little lower than I expected…lots of upside and lots of risk.

155. Alfredo Despaigne—OF, Cuba
156. Delino Deshields—2B, Astros
157. Stetson Allie—P, Pirates
158. Jason Knapp—P, Indians
159. Oscar Tavares—OF, Cardinals

The Nationals get a second Houston prospect who is one of our best assuming he’s healthy.

162. Chad James—P, Marlins
163. Jackie Bradley, Jr—OF, Red Sox (-35)
Probably epitomizes why MLB teams know more than me…one of my favorites fell big time.

164. Jake McGee—P, Rays
165. Juan Francisco—3B, Reds
166. Mark Trumbo—1B, Angels (+23)
167. Simon Castro— P, Padres (-20)

169. Tyson Ross—P, Athletics
170. Luis Heredia—P, Pirates

174. Karsten Whitson—P, Univ of Florida (2013)
175. Matt Lipka—SS, Braves

177. Yamaico Navarro—2B, Red Sox
178. Donavan Tate—OF, Padres
179. Taylor Guerreri—P, Rays
Huge upside pitcher could thrive in the Rays’ system.
180. Thomas Neal—OF, Giants (+11)
181. Jennry Mejia—P, Mets
182. Daniel Norris—P, Blue Jays (-29)
Didn’t go first round, but I think the fall was due mostly to signability rather than talent.

183. Tanner Scheppers—P, Rangers
184. Eric Thames—OF, Blue Jays
185. Hisashi Iwakuma—P, Japan
186. Mikie Mahtook—OF, Rays

197. Kirk Niewenhuis—OF, Mets

The Red Sox & Pirates (budgets) picking Swihart & Bell is not the best news for the Longhorns.

202. Todd Frazier—OF, Reds
203. TiJuan Walker—P, Mariners (new)

210. Chad Bettis—P, Rockies (+12)
211. Barrett Loux—P, Rangers
212. Corey Spangenberg—3B, Padres (new)
A signability pick at #10, but I like the “pure hitter” + speed combination.

244. Matt Scurzur—OF, Cubs
245. Christian Yelich—OF, Marlins
