Top 100 Prospects Update: July 2011

Top 100 Prospects Update: July 2011

I have been meaning to publish an update of our Top 100 rankings.  This list is similar to the Top 250 list except it includes graduations.  I changed our “graduation method” on this list because—after seeing a number of mid-season Top 50 rankings—I liked the method of removing players currently in the major leagues.

N.1.A.K. made a great call that Baseball America published its midseason Top 50. As always, BA published a great list. Was reading the BA list as I wrote these comments so some of them involve comparing this list to BA’s.

1. Bryce Harper—OF, Nationals
2. Mike Trout—OF, Angels
Harper/Trout have pretty much unanimously established themselves at #’s 1 and 2.
3. Julio Teheran—P, Braves
4. Shelby Miller—P, Cardinals
5. Desmond Jennings—OF, Rays
6. Matt Moore—P, Rays
7. Gerrit Cole—P, Pirates
8. Manny Machado—SS, Orioles
9. Jacob Turner—P, Tigers
10. Jameson Taillon—P, Pirates
11. Jesus Montero—C, Yankees
12. Brett Lawrie—3B, Blue Jays
13. Anthony Rendon—3B, Nationals
14. Wil Myers—OF, Royals
15. Dylan Bundy—P, Orioles
16. Mike Minor—P, Braves
17. Martin Perez—P, Rangers
I’ve always been a bit lower on Martin Perez…could be wrong b/c he arguably has the stuff to be a #1 starter.
18. Manny Banuelos—P, Yankees
19. Kyle Gibson—P, Twins
20. Devin Mesoraco—C, Reds
21. Danny Hultzen—P, Mariners
22. Carlos Martinez—P, Cardinals
23. Jake Odorizzi—P, Royals
24. Jurickson Profar—SS, Rangers
25. Drew Pomeranz—P, Indians
26. Robbie Erlin—P, Rangers
27. Miguel Sano—3B, Twins
This ranking is too high? Sano has upside, but he’s far from the majors and international players are speculative.
28. Bubba Starling—OF, Royals
29. Trevor Bauer—P, Diamondbacks
30. Brett Jackson—OF, Cubs
31. Jarred Cosart—P, Phillies
32. Tyler Skaggs—P, Diamondbacks
33. Randall Delgado—P, Braves
34. Yonder Alonso—1B, Reds
35. Hak-Ju Lee—SS, Rays
36. Casey Kelly—P, Padres
Interesting Kelly is no longer in BA’s Top 50…makes sense b/c #’s haven’t improved much in second year of AA.
37. Zach Lee—P, Dodgers
38. Jason Kipnis—2B, Indians
39. Dee Gordon—SS, Dodgers
40. Dellin Betances—P, Yankees
41. Aaron Hicks—OF, Twins
BA stayed patient with Hicks, perhaps smart because his performance has really improved recently.
42. Matt Harvey—P, Mets
43. Nick Franklin—SS, Mariners
44. Jarrod Parker—P, Diamondbacks
45. George Springer—OF, Astros
46. Yasmani Grandal—C, Reds
47. Jonathan Singleton—1B, Phillies
48. Archie Bradley—P, Diamondbacks
49. Deck McGuire—P, Blue Jays
50. Taylor Jungmann—P, Brewers
51. Nick Castellanos—3B, Tigers
Surprised Castellanos was not on BA’s list…they started him #65 and he’s played well recently.
52. James Darnell—3B, Padres
53. Zach Wheeler—P, Giants
54. Mike Montgomery—P, Royals
Didn’t get BA keeping Montgomery in the Top 30…last start went well but overall numbers are pretty rough.
55. Paul Goldschmidt—1B, Diamondbacks
56. Liam Hendriks—P, Twins
57. Anthony Ranaudo—P, Red Sox
58. Travis D’Arnaud—C, Blue Jays
59. Arodys Vizcaino—P, Braves
60. Garrett Richards—P, Angels
61. Wilin Rosario—C, Rockies
62. Leonys Martin—OF, Rangers
BA ranked Martin #25…aggressive but definitely justifiable.
63. Alexander Colome—P, Rays
64. Matt Barnes—P, Red Sox
65. Gary Sanchez—C, Yankees
66. Brad Peacock—P, Nationals
Walker, Gyorko, and Peacock are three fast-risers we’ve been a little bit slow to promote.
67. Grant Green—SS, Athletics
68. Sonny Gray—P, Athletics
69. Jaff Decker—OF, Padres
70. Matt Dominguez—3B, Marlins
71. Jean Segura—2B, Angels
72. Francisco Lindor—SS, Indians
73. Oswaldo Arcia—OF, Twins
74. Trayvon Robinson—OF, Dodgers
75. Zach Cox—3B, Cardinals
76. Jose Altuve—2B, Astros
Hard player to rank b/c you have to balance great stats w/ lack of size.
77. Alex Cobb—P, Rays
78. Derek Norris—C, Nationals
79. Zach Stewart—P, Blue Jays
80. Jerry Sands—OF, Dodgers
81. Taijuan Walker—P, Mariners
82. Nolan Arenado—3B, Rockies
83. Brody Colvin—P, Phillies
84. Michael Choice—OF, Athletics
Was considering moving Choice higher after recent power surge.
85. Tony Sanchez—C, Pirates
86. Bryce Brentz—OF, Red Sox
87. Billy Hamilton—2B/SS, Reds
88. Jed Bradley—P, Brewers
89. Jake Marisnick—OF, Blue Jays
90. Trey McNutt—P, Cubs
91. Jedd Gyorko—3B, Padres
Definitely need to move Gyorko higher b/c the #’s have been good since the AA promotion.
92. Josh Sale—OF, Rays
93. Gary Brown—OF, Giants
94. Dayan Viciedo—OF, White Sox
95. Chris Dwyer—P, Royals
96. Wilmer Flores—SS, Mets
97. Christian Colon—SS, Royals
98. Nick Weglarz—OF, Indians
99. Johnny Giavotella—2B, Royals
100.  Joe Wieland—P, Rangers

Just Missed:  Alexander Torres (P, Rays),Starling Marte (OF, Pirates), Javier Baez (SS, Cubs), and Tim Beckham (SS, Rays).

Also made BA’s Top 50:
Allen Webster (P, Dodgers)–We have him around #120, but nothing wrong w/ putting him top 50 because he’s having a great year.
Anthony Gose (OF, Blue Jays)–Some things to like about Gose’s numbers (better HR’s, huge speed, etc), but still sorta cynical putting him Top 50 b/c of the K-rate.
Matt Szczur (OF, Cubs)–great athlete having a good season…no strong opinions because I haven’t learned enough about him.  Might be a breakout player we haven’t followed closely enough?
