Top 100 Prospects Update: August 2011

Top 100 Prospects Update: August 2011

Here is this week’s prospect list update. I updated the Top 100 prospect list because  it didn’t make sense to publish another top 250 update tonight after we updated a few days ago. But starting next Sunday, we will update the Top 250 list every week for the rest of the season.

The Top 100 is different than the Top 250.  The Top 100 excludes all players in the major leagues and minor leaguers who accumulated enough service to graduate. Looking at the list with graduates is helpful because it shows which prospects we rated too high or too low.  I have arguably been too slow promoting the fast risers and too patient with prospects who are not performing.  Hope y’all enjoy this list, and as always, feedback is appreciated.

1. Bryce Harper—OF, Nationals
2. Mike Trout—OF, Angels
3. Matt Moore—P, Rays
4. Julio Teheran—P, Braves
5. Shelby Miller—P, Cardinals (-0)
Not moving him down, but worth noting Miller had his first really tough start (2/3 IP w/ 4 ER’s).
6. Gerrit Cole—P, Pirates
7. Manny Machado—SS, Orioles
8. Jesus Montero—C, Yankees
9. Anthony Rendon—3B, Nationals
10. Jurickson Profar—SS, Rangers
11. Dylan Bundy—P, Orioles
12. Devin Mesoraco—C, Reds
13. Tyler Skaggs—P, Diamondbacks (+4)
Skaggs’ numbers only improved after the promotion to AA.

15. Trevor Bauer—P, Diamondbacks (+2)
16. Manny Banuelos—P, Yankees
17. Jameson Taillon—P, Pirates (-4)

19. Robbie Erlin—P, Padres
20. Bubba Starling—OF, Royals
21. Carlos Martinez—P, Cardinals
22. Brandon Belt—1B, Giants (-7)
Tough to rank Belt…too early to discount him too much but should not be Top 20.
23. Drew Pomeranz—P, Rockies
24. Miguel Sano—3B, Twins
25. Brett Jackson—OF, Cubs
26. Randall Delgado—P, Braves
27. Jake Odorizzi—P, Royals (+0)
Another tough call b/c 27 looks high…would have moved him down but for the solid start Friday
28. Taijuan Walker—P, Mariners
29. Mike Minor—P, Braves (-5)
30. Jarrod Parker—P, Diamondbacks
31. Leonys Martin—OF, Rangers (+1)
32. Travis D’Arnaud—C, Blue Jays (+4)
33. Hak-Ju Lee—SS, Rays
34. Matt Harvey—P, Mets
35. Anthony Rizzo—1B, Padres (-7)
Keeping Rizzo #35 after the MLB struggles is probably too generous?
36. Wil Myers—OF, Royals (-8)
37. Dellin Betances—P, Yankees (+1)
38. Zach Lee—P, Dodgers (-5)
39. Zach Wheeler—P, Mets
40. Nick Franklin—SS, Mariners
41. Archie Bradley—P, Diamondbacks
42. George Springer—OF, Astros (+2)
43. Jonathan Singleton—1B, Astros
44. Jarred Cosart—P, Astros (-12)
Change not based on performance (would like more K’s), but should rank behind Springer and Singleton
45. Michael Choice—OF, Athletics
46. Zach Cox—3B, Cardinals
47. Deck McGuire—P, Blue Jays
48. Casey Kelly—P, Padres (-9)
49. Mike Montgomery—P, Royals
50. Nolan Arenado—3B, Rockies (-1)
Just 1 for his last 20 AB’s…but only 2 k’s in last 46 AB’s.
51. Yasmani Grandal—C, Reds
52. Joe Wieland—P, Padres
53. Garrett Richards—P, Angels
54. Taylor Jungmann—P, Brewers
55. Oswaldo Arcia—OF, Twins
56. Francisco Lindor—SS, Indians
57. AJ Cole—P, Nationals (+4)
Dominating start last night w/ 9 k’s and 1 BB
58. Gary Brown—OF, Giants (+5)
On a tear the last few days w/ 2 3B’s and a HR…time for AA, IMO
59. Brad Peacock—P, Nationals
60. Nick Castellanos—3B, Tigers
61. Aaron Hicks—OF, Twins
62. Anthony Ranaudo—P, Red Sox
63. Liam Hendriks—P, Twins

69. Jean Segura—2B, Angels
70. Jedd Gyorko—3B, Padres
71. Allen Webster—P, Dodgers
72. Kyle Gibson—P, Twins (-20)
Tough to rank…but should probably be lower
73. Billy Hamilton—2B/SS, Reds (-6)
74. Christian Yelich—OF, Marlins (+12)
75. Matt Dominguez—3B, Marlins
76. Alex White—P, Rockies
77. Wilin Rosario—C, Rockies (-10)
78. Gary Sanchez—C, Yankees
79. Will Middlebrooks—3B, Red Sox (+15)
80. Cheslor Cuthbert—3B, Royals (+15)
Middlebrooks and Cuthbert are both fast-risers I’ve probably promoted a little slowly
81. Alexander Torres—P, Rays
82. Drew Hutchison—P, Blue Jays (+5)
83. Keyvious Sampson—P, Padres
84. Bryce Brentz—OF, Red Sox
85. Jed Bradley—P, Brewers
86. Chris Archer—P, Rays
87. Kaleb Cowart—3B, Angels
88. Tyrell Jenkins—P, Cardinals
89. Jerry Sands—OF, Dodgers (-9)
90. Oscar Taveras—OF, Cardinals
91. Dayan Viciedo—OF, White Sox
92. Anthony Gose—OF, Blue Jays
93. Brody Colvin—P, Phillies (-7)
94. Derek Norris—C, Nationals (-8)
Could make a good case for leaving Norris off the Top 100 based on this season’s performance.
95. Christian Colon—SS, Royals
96. Javier Baez—SS, Cubs
97. Starling Marte—OF, Pirates
98. Eric Surkamp—P, Giants
99. Tim Wheeler—OF, Rockies
100. James Paxton—P, Mariners

Places who should arguably by listed: Kolten Wong—2B, Cardinals, Jonathan Schoop—3B, Orioles, Matt Szczur—OF, Cubs.
