Where would Kipnis rank along these lines?
I couldnt agree more Brad!!! I didnt see the Brewers repeating what they did this season even with Braun in the lineup. Losing Prince is going to hurt them alot! St Louis is going to dramatically decline offensively with Pujols gone and an aging Holliday and Berkman wont help. Their defense suffers alot from that loss as well, as Pujols was a gold glove first basemen.
I see the Reds making some serious noise in that division as long as they dont move Votto like some rumors have been saying. If anything I think they should look to move Alonso and bring back a stud pitcher (Perhaps a Gio Gonzalez or Jair Jurrjens) in some sort of a packaged deal. And if Chapman can learn to control his pitches he can really help that rotation. My sleeper is Pittsburgh though. Andrew McCutchen could develop into an MVP type of player and I think Pedro Alvarez will have a bounce back season.
Speaking of Prince, where do you guys think he ends up signing??? I would not be shocked if Texas landed him, but something inside of me is thinking that either Seattle or Washington is going to sign him. If Washington signs him I think they make playoffs!!
Yeah, I figured the odds of that were pretty low!
What do y’all think of Ramirez going to the Brewers? I saw two conflicting opinions about how the Brewers will do next season. There was a post on Sweet Spot that was cautiously optimistic, but then KLaw had a post expressing more concerns. I tend to agree w/ KLaw that the Brewers will have a tough time. Losing Prince really hurts and then the situation w/ Braun is exactly what the team did not need. As a prospect follower, my other concern is farm system does not offer a lot of short-term help…even though I think Gamel might provide a pleasant surprise if he gets an extended opportunity at first base.
How do y’all think the NL Central will shape up next season? With the Cardinals and Brewers losing lots of talent, part of me thinks now is a decent time for the Reds to play a little more aggressively. I think the Reds have more talent than last season’s record indicates, and even though you can’t have too much depth in your farm system, they have a number of MLB ready players who will have a difficult time finding room on their roster.
It would take a really great return to make the really bold move of trading Alonso. But it might make sense to try to predict which of those other players will have difficulty finding a long-term role (Sappeldt, Frazier, Cozart, Francisco, Grandal, etc), and then make a move perhaps also selling high on a few long-term guys who might be overvalued in the trade market. Not sure though! I thought the same thing earlier last summer, and as it turns out, the Reds were very smart staying put b/c an aggressive approach clearly would have left the roster in a much worse position.
Nope not the same league
I like that deal. Assuming everyone from last year’s draft is available, I think that first group of players (Cole, Hultzen, Bauer, Bundy, Rendon, Starling) offer value comparable to Taillon. By acquiring the 4th pick, you can get one of those elite players while adding another solid prospect at 15 (maybe Wong or Spangenberg).
BTW, did the negotiations for Taillon involve Jordan Zimmerman? We had a person ask last week on the comment board about a potential deal involving Taillon, and it would be funny if it was the same dynasty league.
I got a guy that is wanting to get Taillon from me. The team I just took over is in rebuilding mode with probably no shot of competing this year or the next. I am thinking about asking for two 1st round picks (4 and 15) for him. Everyone from the most recent draft is available. What is everyone’s thoughts on this?
For sure, Derrick. I need to start moving faster releasing these rankings! Two friends and I are starting a law firm that opens January 2nd, and even though I’m excited about it, the downside is getting everything ready has cut into my baseball time more than I’d like. We hired a web designer to build a message board which should be up and running pretty soon, and I’m going to start getting more aggressive publishing updates. Ideally, I want to have the positional rankings finished by Christmas Time and start publishing the general rankings shortly thereafter. I started working on the shortstop rankings and listed 40 players. I think I’m going to publish that tomorrow and then start working on third base.
Also, there are a few solid lists appearing in the forums of minor league ball. Even though I don’t agree with all of the rankings, some of the differences provide a basic idea of differences that might be on our list (ex: we underrated Boagerts).

Good call on Lipka, Jag! It’ll be interesting to see how he does making the transition to center field.
Lipka will be moving to CF next season.
First off I’d like to thank you and your staff very much for they’re hard work. You’ve enlightened me as to new persons of interest when prospect mining in my deep leagues. As well as kept me informed as to value changes in previously known commodities.
With that being said….do you have any idea on when the top 100 2012 prospects will be next updated? I’ve got several leagues that have very active off seasons, and players, especially minor leaguers are constantly on the move. Any early off season updates would be greatly appreciated.
Appel seems like the best college option at this point. But I hope they also look at Marrero and Zunino. Then, there is a pretty long list of HS players worth considering. Ideally, one of those guys will offer enough upside to make the top pick a clear decision. But from my perspective, all the players offer upside but nobody blows me away to the point I don’t think they could bust fairly easily.
Totally agree about trading picks! It might make sense for the ’stros to trade down this year. I think we would like to spend aggressively in this year’s draft, and the first pick would be more awesome if there was a huge name (Strasburg, Harper, David Price…any of the first six in the 2011 draft). The only downside w/ having the top pick is we might be forced to place huge resources in the #1 pick when the value difference is not that great from the remaining players. The last thing I want them to do is go cheap w/ the first pick b/c going cheap w/ our picks is the main cause of our current problems. But with the new system (budgets, etc) and the way the board is shaping up, it’s gotta be an option b/c we might be better spreading our resources across a few picks rather than investing too much in one player.
